Saudi Arabia, Canada trade nears $18bn over 5 years 

RIYADH: Trade between Saudi Arabia and Canada reached approximately SR11 billion ($2.93 billion) in 2025, while total bilateral trade amounted to around SR66.3 billion over the past five years (2021-2025), reflecting continued commercial ties and diversified trade flows between the two countries. 

According to the Financial Analysis Unit at Al-Eqtisadiah, citing data from the General Authority for Statistics, Saudi national exports to Canada totaled SR6.3 billion in 2025, up 0.6 percent year on year. Re-exports added SR126 million, while imports from Canada reached SR4.5 billion, marking annual growth of 0.5 percent. 

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney began an official visit to Saudi Arabia on July 8, his first official visit to the Kingdom since taking office in 2025, following his participation in the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkiye. 

During the visit, Carney is scheduled to hold talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on ways to strengthen bilateral relations, with discussions focusing on energy, critical minerals, investment, infrastructure, advanced technologies, and defense cooperation, according to a statement from the Canadian prime minister’s office. 

Mineral products topped Saudi national exports to Canada, with a value of nearly SR6 billion, followed by aluminum and aluminum products at SR199 million. 

Fruit ranked third at around SR24 million, followed by iron and steel at SR12.4 million, and dairy products, eggs, and other edible animal products at SR6.8 million. 

Among re-exports, machinery and mechanical appliances and parts led the list at SR43.5 million, followed by medical, optical, and imaging equipment worth SR26.8 million. 

Aircraft and aircraft parts came next at SR16.8 million, followed by copper and copper products at SR14.4 million, while cars and automotive parts accounted for SR11.8 million. 

Cars dominate Saudi imports from Canada 

On the import side, cars and automotive parts were Saudi Arabia's largest imports from Canada in 2025, totaling SR1.32 billion. They were followed by machinery and mechanical appliances and parts worth SR735.5 million, while pharmaceutical products came next at SR462.1 million. 

Medical, optical, and imaging equipment, valued at SR329.4 million, came next while Saudi imports of electrical machinery and equipment and their parts reached approximately SR238.6 million. 

Steady growth in bilateral trade 

Bilateral trade totaled SR14.8 billion in 2021, rising to SR16 billion in 2022. It then declined to SR12.1 billion in 2023 before edging up to SR12.5 billion in 2024. In 2025, total trade stood at SR11 billion, according to the annual data. 

Carney’s talks in Riyadh are also expected to address key regional and international developments, particularly the situation in the Middle East and maritime security. 

The Canadian prime minister’s office said the visit will be the first by a Canadian prime minister to Saudi Arabia in 26 years. Jean Chretien was the last Canadian prime minister to visit the Kingdom, in 2000.
