Acwa granted exclusive mandate to export Saudi green hydrogen

RIYADH: Saudi utility giant Acwa has received an exclusive government mandate to export green hydrogen and its derivatives produced in the Kingdom to international markets, including green ammonia, green methanol and green fuels.

In a statement, Acwa said the mandate positions the company as a key player in advancing Saudi Arabia’s strategy to become a global leader in clean energy exports.

The government approval supports the Kingdom’s strategic objective of establishing itself as a global leader in clean energy exports and accelerating the development of a diversified, low-carbon economy under Vision 2030.

At the heart of this mission lies Neom Green Hydrogen Co., through which the Kingdom aims to become a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen. The company, a joint venture between Acwa, Neom and Air Products, is expected to produce up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen per day by the end of 2026.

Samir Serhan, CEO at Acwa, said: “This government approval reflects the Kingdom’s confidence in Acwa’s ability to deliver strategic infrastructure at scale and reinforces our responsibility to help position Saudi Arabia as a leading global exporter of clean energy.”

He added: “Green hydrogen and renewable electricity exports represent the next chapter in the Kingdom’s energy leadership, creating new opportunities for economic growth while contributing to global energy security and the energy transition.”

Serhan also said Acwa is committed to supporting Saudi Arabia’s national ambition in the renewable energy sector, while delivering the infrastructure that creates long-term value for the Kingdom and its partners around the world.

In a bourse filing, Acwa said it has also been tasked with developing projects to produce, transmit and export electricity generated from renewable energy sources to European and Arab markets, supporting regional energy security while enabling the Kingdom to export competitively priced clean power.

“Our experience in developing, financing, constructing, and operating large-scale renewable energy and green hydrogen projects provides the execution foundation that this assignment demands,” said Serhan.

He added: “We look forward to working closely with government entities, strategic partners, and international stakeholders to develop the integrated export infrastructure that connects Saudi Arabia’s abundant renewable resources with growing global demand for clean molecules and clean electricity.”

The statement added that the mandate further reinforces the company’s position as a strategic national partner in developing infrastructure that supports the Kingdom’s long-term economic diversification, industrial development and global energy leadership.

Acwa said it would disclose any material developments and the financial impact of the approval in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.

This approval is also expected to support the implementation of several agreements signed by Acwa to export green hydrogen from the Kingdom.

Acwa signed a series of agreements and memorandums of understanding in July 2025 to export renewable energy and green hydrogen to Europe under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor project.

In February, Acwa signed a memorandum of understanding for a Green Ammonia Corridor with German counterparts, including EnBW Energie Baden-Wurttemberg AG. The agreement builds on prior collaboration for the Yanbu green hydrogen hub and aims to strengthen export pathways to Europe and Germany.
