JEDDAH: Red Sea Global has completed the modernization of Al-Wajh International Airport in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk region, increasing passenger capacity and enabling it to accommodate larger commercial aircraft.
The airport has resumed operations and is currently served by Saudia flights, with three weekly flights from Riyadh and two from Jeddah. International flights are expected at a later stage.
According to Red Sea Global, the upgraded airport can now handle up to 500,000 passengers annually, up from 100,000 previously.
The terminal has four gates and a peak capacity of 330 arriving and departing passengers per hour.
The airport can receive aircraft including the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families, as well as seaplanes.
The expansion is expected to support rising passenger demand and improve connectivity across the Tabuk region.
John Pagano, group CEO of Red Sea Global, said the project aims to improve regional connectivity and provide additional transport links for residents and visitors.
Abdulaziz Al-Abdan, executive director of aviation and airport operations at Red Sea Global, said the upgrade will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and higher passenger volumes.
He added that work is ongoing with airline partners and regulatory authorities to develop future routes.
Al-Wajh International Airport is also expected to cater for visitors traveling to Amaala, the tourism destination under development on the Kingdom’s northwest coast, about 45 minutes away by road.
The renovated terminal includes lounges, retail outlets, banking services, car rentals, and parking facilities. It also supports seaplane and helicopter operations.
The project is the first infrastructure development completed by Red Sea Global outside its tourism portfolio.
