Where We Are Going Today: Spicy Bowl China

As someone who is always searching for authentic and affordable international food in Riyadh, I recently visited Spicy Bowl China in east Riyadh, a small Chinese restaurant that has gained attention on social media for its Nanchang-style noodles.

The restaurant is owned and operated by Chinese staff, and specializes in noodle dishes, soups and a handful of traditional Chinese comfort foods. One of the biggest draws is the price. For about SR20 ($5.30), you can order a bowl of noodles that is filling enough for a quick lunch or dinner.

My experience, however, was mixed. I visited shortly after Eid Al-Adha, and some of the dishes did not quite match the colorful presentations I had seen online.

The seafood noodle soup, for example, arrived without the seafood balls I expected and instead contained fried tofu. The broth was mild and lacked some of the flavor and toppings shown in promotional videos. The fried noodles were satisfying but a bit saltier than I prefer.

That said, I could see why the restaurant has developed a loyal following. The Nanchang noodles had a homemade quality that felt comforting and authentic. Adding an egg made the dish even more enjoyable.

I also tried the fried bananas, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the meal. Crispy on the outside and sweet on the inside, they made for a simple but delicious dessert.

During my visit, the dining area felt quite warm and the air conditioning struggled to keep up. Still, the staff were friendly and the service was efficient.

One thing worth noting is that portions can vary depending on what you order. Some dishes are generous and ideal for sharing, while others may feel smaller. The menu itself is relatively limited, focusing mainly on noodle-based dishes rather than offering a wide selection of Chinese cuisine.

Overall, Spicy Bowl China is the kind of place I would recommend to adventurous diners looking for authentic Chinese flavors without spending a fortune.

While not every dish impressed me, the restaurant’s homemade-style noodles, affordable prices and standout fried bananas make it worth a visit. If you go, I would recommend starting with the Nanchang noodles and saving room for dessert.
