Gaza documentaries among Peabody winners as stars hit the red carpet

DUBAI: The 86th annual Peabody Awards on Sunday night in Beverly Hills brought together some of the biggest names in television, journalism and digital media to celebrate storytelling with cultural and social impact.

Yara Shahidi, who has an Iranian father and African-American mother, walked the red carpet ahead of the event in a Loewe dress. She was joined by celebrities including Jimmy Kimmel, Rhea Seehorn, Nathan Fielder, Ike Barinholtz and Halle Bailey.

This year’s ceremony was hosted by American-Palestinian comedian and actor Mo Amer, known for the Netflix series “Mo.” Special honorees included Amy Poehler, who received the Career Achievement Award, while screenwriter Sterlin Harjo was presented with the Trailblazer Award.

Among the night’s major winners were “Andor,” “The Pitt,” “Adolescence” and “Pluribus” in the entertainment categories. Documentary winners included “No Other Land,” a film by a Palestinian-Israeli collective that shows the destruction of the occupied West Bank’s Masafer Yatta region.

There were other Middle Eastern voices among the evening’s notable honorees. News program Fault Lines won for its reports “Kids Under Fire” and “The Disappearance of Dr. Abu Safiya,” which “document attacks on some of Gaza’s most vulnerable, and the healthcare facilities they turn to amid the ongoing violence,” according to the Peabody website.

Established in 1940, the Peabody Awards are considered among the most prestigious honors in broadcasting and digital storytelling. The awards focus on recognizing work that contributes to public understanding and reflects important social issues rather than ratings or commercial success.

More than 1,000 entries were submitted for consideration this year, with winners selected by unanimous vote from a panel of jurors.

On stage, host Amer was briefly joined by Ben Affleck, as well as musician Aloe Blacc, who performed.
