ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has called for stronger global cooperation and greater investment in national capacities to counter militancy, its permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) said on Saturday, stressing a coordinated approach to address evolving security threats.
The statement came at an event co-hosted by Pakistan’s UN mission and the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), titled as ‘New and Emerging Trends in Terrorism.’
It brought together diplomats, counter-terrorism experts, UN officials, policy practitioners, and academics to examine evolving threats posed by developments in information and communication technologies.
“There was broad agreement that the changing terrorism landscape requires a balanced yet firm response— strengthening international cooperation and national capacities, harnessing technology responsibly for prevention, safeguarding humanitarian and human rights principles, and ensuring that digital governance keeps pace with rapidly evolving threats,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, said on X.
Counter terrorism remains one of the key priorities of Pakistan, which has been facing a surge in militancy, during its 2025-26 term as an elected member of the UN Security Council, according to the envoy.
The event took place at a time when the UN General Assembly is also negotiating the 9th review of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy (GCTS), a unique instrument to enhance national, regional and international efforts to counter terrorism.
“This joint event reflects Pakistan’s firm commitment to facilitate dialogue, foster discussions and promote understanding at multilateral platforms to identify practical ways to address the growing and evolving threat of terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, through a comprehensive approach at the national, regional and global levels,” Ahmad added.
