ABHA: The southwestern city of Abha is witnessing the peak of its annual jacaranda bloom, as streets and parks turn into sweeping landscapes of vibrant purple, underscoring the distinctive mountain environment of the Asir region and reinforcing the city’s growing appeal as a seasonal tourism destination.
Rows of jacaranda trees now line major roads and pedestrian walkways, their blossoms cascading into natural corridors that have become a magnet for residents, tourists, photographers, and content creators. The bloom, coupled with Abha’s mild spring temperatures, has driven a noticeable surge in visitor numbers and local tourism activity.
According to the Asir Region Municipality, Abha is home to more than 14,000 jacaranda trees, part of a broader strategy to expand green spaces and enhance the urban landscape. Authorities plan to increase planting across roads and public squares, aligning with environmental sustainability goals and broader efforts to elevate quality of life while strengthening the city’s visual identity.

Municipal officials note that afforestation initiatives have contributed to higher vegetation cover and improved microclimate conditions, while also boosting the city’s aesthetic appeal and eco-tourism potential. The jacaranda season has become one of Abha’s most prominent natural highlights, drawing visitors from across the Kingdom and abroad to experience its temperate weather and scenic highland terrain.
Complementing the season, King Khalid University has launched a series of public events, including a jacaranda race featuring 10 km, 21 km, and 50 km distances, alongside prizes for top finishers. The university has also organized walking activities along jacaranda-lined routes and awareness campaigns promoting environmental conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
Asir Region continues to develop its tourism offerings and leverage its natural assets, positioning Abha as a leading destination that blends nature, culture, and quality of life into a cohesive visitor experience.
