  • The power plants will produce a total capacity of 100 megawatts for the Hadramout coast
  • It aims to enhance the Yemeni government’s ability to provide essential services, such as education and healthcare

RIYADH: The Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen and the governor of Hadramout laid the foundation stone in Al-Mukalla city on Monday for a series of power plant projects, which will have a total capacity of 100 megawatts for the Hadramout coast.

SPDRY is funding the project and is part of a tripartite cooperation that includes Yemen’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy and Gulf Power International, which is implementing it.

It includes the Jawl Masah station, which has a capacity of 40 MW, and the Ambikha station, with a capacity of 60 MW. Additionally, a third station is planned for the wadi and desert of Hadramout, with a capacity of 100 MW.

Salem Al-Khanbashi, a member of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council and the governor of Hadramout, participated in the ceremony. He expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its ongoing support for the Yemeni people and for SPDRY’s efforts to enhance basic services, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi support for Yemen aims to boost electricity production and enhance the government’s ability to provide essential services, such as education and healthcare.

Eng. Abdullah Basulaiman, SDRPY office director in Hadramout; Eng. Nasser Al-Shehri, director of the program’s transportation portfolio; Hassan Salem Al-Jilani, deputy governor of Hadramout; and Eng. Hisham Al-Saidi, assistant deputy governor for the valley and desert districts, also attended the ceremony.

In January, Saudi Arabia announced a pledge to invest SR1.9 billion ($506 million) in various development projects in Yemen, including the electricity, transport, health, education, and water sectors.

The Kingdom also provided SR1.3 billion in the first quarter of this year to cover operational expenses and salaries, thereby boosting the local economy, according to the SPA.
