Arab League chief condemns Iranian strikes, urges UN to intervene to stop attacks

NEW YORK: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned what he described as ongoing Iranian missile and drone attacks against multiple Arab states in violation of international law.

He said the strikes had targeted civilian infrastructure, including airports, ports, energy facilities and residential areas, resulting in civilian casualties and extensive material destruction.

Aboul Gheit urged the council to take action, citing what he said was a breach of Security Council Resolution 2817 adopted in March 2026, and stressed that Arab states have maintained a policy of good neighborliness.

“These Iranian attacks cannot be accepted or justified under any pretext or claim,” said Aboul Gheit.

The Arab League chief also condemned what he described as Iranian actions threatening the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab, warning against disruptions and violations of freedom of navigation.

“We call upon Iran to immediately cease all attacks against commercial vessels. And to refrain from any attempt to impede lawful passage or undermine freedom of navigation in accordance with international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” he said.
