LONDON: The Jordanian Armed Forces intercepted 10 attempts to smuggle more than 1.5 million narcotic pills and 100 blocks of hashish on Wednesday.
On the northern front, authorities intercepted nine smuggling attempts where traffickers used electronically guided balloons to exploit weather conditions and evade border guard surveillance, according to Jordan’s Petra news agency.
Another attempt was detected at the western border involving a drone that was carrying about 100 blocks of hashish.
Authorities reported a complex increase in smuggling methods into Jordan, using both electronically controlled balloons and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The country is also facing daily attacks from Iranian missiles and drones. On Wednesday, Jordanian air defenses intercepted a missile launched from Iran, along with two drones targeting the country within the past 24 hours.
The army reaffirmed that neither regional developments nor adverse weather would affect its readiness to protect borders and address threats to national security, Petra added.
