ISLAMABAD: Berlin and Islamabad have signed an €18 million agreement aimed at expanding hydropower and other renewable energy projects in northern Pakistan, the Pakistani information ministry said on Saturday, in a move to boost clean electricity generation and support sustainable development.

Pakistan, which ranks among countries most affected by climate change, has been making efforts to transition toward clean energy despite economic challenges in recent years.

The grant funding will contribute to the provision of clean and green electricity in Pakistan’s northern areas through utilization of abundant water resources, improving living standards and livelihoods of the local population.

Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Division Secretary Humair Karim and KfW Country Director Sebastian Jacobi signed the agreement aimed at addressing the increasing energy needs of the region while employing environment friendly solutions.

“These initiatives are truly commendable as they are geared to impact the lives of the common man,” Karim said.

“Government of Pakistan values this support of the German Government to invest in such schemes and looks forward to further strengthening future cooperation.”

KfW’s Jacobi said the grant will contribute toward socio-economic uplift of the masses in Pakistan’s northern regions.

“This will also help to create more jobs and promote tourism in the area,” he added.
