Syria says has taken over another base from US forces

  • Sunday’s announcement follows ‌the US ‌pullout ‌from Al-Tanf strategic base

DAMASCUS: Syria’s defense ministry said on Sunday it had taken over the Al-Shadadi base in the northeast from US forces, days after assuming control of a facility near the Jordan-Iraq borders.
“The forces of the Syrian Arab Army have taken over the Al-Shadadi military base in the Hasakah countryside following coordination with the American side,” a ministry statement said.
US forces operating as part of the international coalition against the Daesh group had been stationed at the base outside the town of the same name.
The town housed a prison where Kurdish forces detained members of the extremist jihadist organization, before government forces advanced into the area last month.
Sunday’s announcement follows US confirmation on Thursday that its forces had vacated Al-Tanf base near Syria’s borders with Jordan and Iraq.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were a major partner of the US-led international coalition against Daesh, and were instrumental in the group’s territorial defeat in Syria in 2019.
But following the fall in December 2024 of longtime ruler Bashar Assad, the United States has drawn closer to the new government in Damascus, recently declaring that the need for its alliance with the Kurds had largely passed.
Despite IS’s territorial defeat, the group remains active, however.
On Saturday, the US Central Command said its forces had struck more than 30 Daesh targets in Syria this month.
A CENTCOM statement said the air strikes between February 3 and 12 hit IS “infrastructure and weapons storage targets.”

Israeli strike kills 2 Palestinians in Gaza, health officials say, the latest deaths as truce stalls

  • Deadly Israeli strikes have repeatedly disrupted the truce since it took effect on Oct. 10
  • The military said the person they killed was a militant and had posed a threat to troops

GAZA CITY: An Israeli strike on Thursday killed at least two Palestinians and wounded five others east of Gaza City, according to Fadel Naeem, director of Al-Ahli Hospital, where the casualties arrived.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment.
Deadly Israeli strikes have repeatedly disrupted the truce since it took effect on Oct. 10. The escalating Palestinian toll has prompted many in Gaza to say it feels like the war has continued unabated.
Separately, Israel’s military said Thursday that soldiers in southern Gaza had killed a Palestinian who had crossed the line dividing the Israeli-held area of the strip from the area most Palestinians are crammed into. Such shootings have become a common occurrence in the territory since the ceasefire took hold.
The military said the person they killed was a militant and had posed a threat to troops. It maintains that claim when describing most cases of Palestinians shot down in the vicinity of the line, even though some civilians have been killed, including young children, said a military official who spoke to AP on the condition of anonymity in line with military rules.
