NICOSIA: Saudi Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Elkhereiji, representing King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, attended a ceremony in Nicosia to mark Cyprus’ assumption of the Council of the EU presidency.

The meeting, which marks the start of the country’s six-month term, was attended by Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.

Noting “constantly numerous” challenges, Cypriot ‌President Nikos Christodoulides said: “As the ‍Cyprus Presidency we ‍will respond to this institutional obligation ‍to the EU with a single goal — to strengthen, because this is the need shown by international developments, the autonomy of the EU, to push European integration even further.”

Cyprus joined the EU in 2004.
