RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman congratulated Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa on Monday, the first anniversary of Syria’s Liberation Day.

Syrian forces led by Al-Sharaa toppled the regime of Bashar Assad on Dec. 8, 2024, bringing an end to more than five decades of Assad family rule.

“The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud sent a cable of congratulations to … President Ahmad Al-Sharaa of the Syrian Arab Republic on the anniversary of his country’s Liberation Day,” the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The crown prince also sent a cable of congratulations to Al-Sharaa, the SPA added.

Al-Sharaa chose Saudi Arabia for his first foreign visit as the country’s new president in February, and in May the crown prince facilitated a meeting in the Kingdom between US President Donald Trump and Al-Sharaa, during which Washington announced it would lift sanctions on Syria.
