Ukraine winter wheat crops show no problem ahead of winter, farmers union says

  • The government said this week farmers had sown 4.74 million hectares of winter wheat
  • Ukraine is a major European wheat grower and exporter

KYIV: Ukraine has almost completed sowing winter wheat for the 2026 harvest and crops will enter winter in good condition, major farmers union UAC said on Tuesday.
The government said this week farmers had sown 4.74 million hectares of winter wheat as of December 1, or 99.3 percent of the expected area.
“There is sufficient moisture, the plants will enter winter in normal condition, and no problems have been identified so far,” UAC said in a weekly report.
In recent years, Ukraine has regularly faced drought during the autumn sowing season.
But favorable weather conditions allow the government to forecast a higher wheat output next year which can rise to 24-25 million metric tons from 23 million tons in 2025.
Ukraine is a major European wheat grower and exporter, and winter wheat dominates its production of the grain.
The government also said it would not limit wheat exports in 2025/26 July-June season.
