Pakistan Petroleum restores gas output at Adam West X-1 well after six-year shutdown

  • Workover restores gas flow at 8.5 MMscfd after production ceased due to water breakthrough in 2019
  • Well to be tied into Hala facilities following rig demobilization, Pakistan Petroleum says

KARACHI: State-owned upstream oil and gas exploration and production company Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has successfully completed a workover and sidetrack operation at the Adam West X-1 well in Sindh’s Hala Block, restoring gas production more than six years after the well was shut-in due to water breakthrough, the company said on Monday.

The Hala Block, situated in a mature hydrocarbon region of Sindh, has been the site of several gas discoveries over the past decade. Pakistan, which faces chronic shortages in domestic gas output, has increasingly relied on tighter reservoir management, workovers and rehabilitation of older wells to help supplement declining production across mature fields.

The Adam West field, located in District Matiari, was originally discovered in 2014 in the Lower Goru formation, with the well beginning production in 2015. Output stopped in 2019 after water inflow made the well unproductive, prompting multiple unsuccessful attempts to isolate the lower water-producing intervals. According to PPL, reservoir modelling later confirmed that a sidetrack was both technically and commercially viable.

“Adam West X-1 ST has been successfully tested at gas rates of approximately 8.5 MMscfd at Wellhead Pressure (WHP) of 540 psig and choke size of 58/64,” PPL said in a statement, adding that workover operations began in Oct. 2025.

PPL holds a 65 percent working interest in the Hala Block and operates it jointly with partner Mari Energies Limited, which has a 35 percent share.

The company described the sidetrack as an inherently challenging undertaking “with significant risks and uncertainties,” saying it was executed after detailed planning.

The Adam West X-1 sidetrack will now be connected to the Hala production facilities once rig demobilization is complete. “The well will be tied-in to Hala facilities at the earliest, after rig demobilization,” PPL said.

The company added that it “remains committed to energy security, growth and prosperity of the country,” positioning the restoration of output from Adam West as part of broader efforts to stabilize Pakistan’s domestic gas supply.

Pakistan to host PSL 11 from Mar. 26 to May 3, says PCB chairman

  • PSL, Pakistan’s premier T20 cricket tournament, is set to feature eight city-based teams in upcoming edition
  • Pakistan Cricket Board has held roadshows in London and New York to entice investors to bid for new PSL teams

ISLAMABAD: The 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will be held from Mar. 26 to May 11, 2026, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced on Sunday.

The PSL is Pakistan’s premier T20 cricket league that features a mix of local and international players and coaches. The PSL features six teams, each named after a Pakistani city, with the upcoming edition set to feature two new teams.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, along with former cricketing greats Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram, participated in a roadshow in New York on Sunday. The PCB has held a roadshow in London previously to attract international investors to bid for the new teams.

“I can tell you one thing that PSL will start on Mar. 26, which is very near,” Naqvi said at the roadshow.

“And the final we are planning to hold on May 3.”

Naqvi said the revised schedule for the auction of the two new PSL teams will take place on Jan. 8. The auction was originally scheduled to take place on Jan. 6; however, it was postponed by one day due to a week-long extension of the deadline for the submission of the bids for the new franchises, initially set at Dec. 15.

The PCB said this week it had pushed the deadline to submit the bids for the two new teams keeping in mind “growing interest” from investors in the US, Europe and the Middle East.
