Personal physician finds ‘no evidence’ of poisoning in ex-PM Khan’s wife

  • The former PM and his party claimed in recent weeks Bushra Bibi had been subjected to slow poisoning
  • Her personal physician says she fell ill two months ago, but she had largely recovered in his assessment

ISLAMABAD: The personal physician of former prime minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, said on Thursday there was no evidence that she was given any poisonous substance during her captivity at the Bani Gala residence in Islamabad after performing her medical examination.
Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have claimed in recent weeks that the former first lady was subjected to slow poisoning which had led to a significant decline in her health condition.
The Pakistani authorities declared Khan’s Bani Gala residence sub-jail and kept his wife over there after her conviction in a case involving the illegal sale of state gifts which the former prime minister received during his term in the office.
“She was saying that she fell ill two months ago,” Dr. Asim Yousaf said while speaking to the media. “Now her condition has almost completely improved. She still feels a bit of burning in her stomach, but there are no blisters in her mouth.”
“The illness she experienced two months ago occurred after having her food,” he continued. “However, we don’t know exactly what it was. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that she was poisoned.”
Yousaf said Bibi had largely recovered in his professional assessment, though there were a few remaining symptoms, like she was not feeling hungry.
He added the problem could be resolved through further medical examination.
During her interaction with the media before a court appearance a day earlier, Khan’s wife said she had been given “three drops of toilet cleaner” in her food.
She said this had led to extreme pain in her chest and stomach and her eyes had also swollen up.
