Five killed, 10 injured as gas cylinder explosion flattens building in Pakistan’s Punjab

  • Officials say around five people still believed to be under the rubble, efforts on to save them
  • The incident comes a day after a similar explosion in a vehicle killed seven people, injured 14

ISLAMABAD: At least five people were killed and 10 were injured on Sunday after a gas cylinder explosion flattened a three-story building in Pakistan’s eastern province of Punjab, local media reported, citing officials.
The explosion occurred in a building located on the Grand Trunk Road in Punjab’s Jhelum City at around 9:45am, Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported.
Rescue teams immediately rushed to the site of the explosion and transported the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“Five bodies had been recovered and shifted to the Jhelum District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital along with the 10 injured,” the report said, citing Additional Deputy Commissioner Hassan Tariq.
“Four to five people were still believed to be under the rubble and rescue efforts were under way to save them.”
The Jhelum police said the rescue operation and relief activities were underway, adding that the debris of the collapsed building was being removed with the help of heavy equipment.
“Under the supervision of district police officer (DPO) Jhelum, Nasir Mehmood Bajwa, the young officers of Jhelum Police are continuously engaged in relief activities,” they wrote on Twitter.
“Officers are actively participating in the relief activities and the debris of the building is being removed with the help of heavy machinery. All available resources are being utilized.”

Explosions caused by faulty gas cylinders — which are used for cooking as well as in cars — are common in Pakistan.
On Saturday, seven people lost their lives, while 14 others were left injured as a gas cylinder installed in a vehicle exploded in the Bhalwal town of Punjab’s Sargodha district. Last month, five people lost their lives in separate incidents involving the explosion of gas cylinders in Pakistan.

Pakistani students stuck in Afghanistan permitted to go home

  • The border between the countries has been shut since Oct. 12
  • Worries remain for students about return after the winter break

JALALABAD: After three months, some Pakistani university students who were stuck in Afghanistan due to deadly clashes between the neighboring countries were “permitted to go back home,” Afghan border police said Monday.

“The students from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (northwest Pakistan) who were stuck on this side of the border, only they were permitted to cross and go to their homes,” said Abdullah Farooqi, Afghan border police spokesman.

The border has “not reopened” for other people, he said.

The land border has been shut since October 12, leaving many people with no affordable option of making it home.

“I am happy with the steps the Afghan government has taken to open the road for us, so that my friends and I will be able to return to our homes” during the winter break, Anees Afridi, a Pakistani medical student in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, told AFP.

However, worries remain for the hundreds of students about returning to Afghanistan after the break ends.

“If the road is still closed from that side (Pakistan), we will be forced to return to Afghanistan for our studies by air.”

Flights are prohibitively expensive for most, and smuggling routes also come at great risk.

Anees hopes that by the time they return for their studies “the road will be open on both sides through talks between the two governments.”
