OIC calls for greater cooperation over Jerusalem

  • Taha said the continued Israeli measures that target Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem are extremely dangerous

JEDDAH: Hissein Brahim Taha, secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, addressed a high-level conference in support of Jerusalem at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo on Sunday.

It was attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

Taha reiterated that the continued Israeli measures that target Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem are extremely dangerous.

He noted the international community’s responsibility to preserve the occupied city’s historical and legal status, especially the Al-Aqsa Mosque as the place of worship for Muslims alone.

Taha said the systematic Israeli attacks and violations in Jerusalem call for strengthening existing OIC and Arab League cooperation to provide political support for the holy city in international forums.

He added that the steadfastness and determination of Jerusalem’s Palestinians, and their keenness to enable their institutions to continue providing essential services, reflects their faith in their cause and their commitment to defending the city, its identity, history and sanctity.

He said the violations committed by Israel, the occupying power, are an attack on the inalienable religious rights and heritage of the Islamic Ummah, a provocation against Muslims worldwide, a violation of freedom of worship and the sanctity of holy places, and a flagrant violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions.

Taha warned that the continuation of these violations threatens peace and stability in the region and the world at large.

Syrian government foils Daesh plot to attack churches and New Year celebrations

  • Bomber kills soldier in Aleppo, detonates explosives injuring 2 others

ALEPPO, DAMASCUS: The Syrian Interior Ministry announced on Thursday that it had thwarted a Daesh plot to carry out suicide attacks targeting New Year celebrations and churches, particularly in Aleppo.
The ministry said in a statement that, as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts and careful monitoring of Daesh cells in cooperation with partner agencies, it had received intelligence indicating plans for suicide attacks targeting New Year celebrations in several provinces, particularly Aleppo, with a focus on churches and civilian gathering areas.
The ministry added that it took preemptive measures, including reinforcing security around churches, deploying mobile and fixed patrols, and setting up checkpoints across the city.
During operations at a checkpoint in Aleppo’s Bab Al-Faraj district, security forces intercepted a suspected Daesh member who opened fire. One internal security soldier was killed, and the attacker detonated explosives, injuring two others.
Daesh recently increased its attacks in Syria, and was blamed for an attack last month in Palmyra that killed three Americans.
On Dec. 13, two US soldiers and an American civilian were killed in an attack Washington blamed on a lone Daesh gunman in Palmyra.
In retaliation, American forces struck scores of Daesh targets in Syria.
Syrian authorities have also carried out several operations against Daesh since then, saying on Dec. 25 they had killed a senior leader of the group.
