After four years of self-imposed exile, PM Sharif’s son returns to Pakistan

  • Suleman Sharif left Pakistan in 2018 after corruption cases were registered against him
  • Last week, a Pakistani court barred investigative authorities from arresting him on return

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s son Suleman Sharif returned to Pakistan on Sunday, four years after he left the country when multiple cases were registered against him.

PM Sharif’s son has been in London since 2018 when Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) registered corruption cases against him ahead of general elections 2018. He appeared in a few of the hearings but subsequently left the country.

Sharif was an accused in a money laundering case registered by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) while NAB nominated him in an assets-beyond-means reference.

Last week, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) barred FIA and NAB from arresting Sharif, who petitioned the court for protective bail. The bail would enable him to surrender before a trial court.

“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s son Suleman Shehbaz has returned to the country,” the ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) wrote on Twitter. A video of Sharif greeting his father, the prime minister, was also shared with the post.

The IHC had directed Sharif to surrender himself before the court by December 13.

The PML-N has repeatedly said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will also return to Pakistan and lead the party in the upcoming general elections.

Nawaz, Prime Minister Sharif’s elder brother, has been in London since 2019 after he was allowed bail on medical grounds. He has since then not returned to Pakistan and alleges the cases against him are politically motivated.

He was restricted for life from holding any political office by Pakistan’s top court in April 2018, followed by his conviction in a corruption case the same year.
