JEDDAH, 5 April — The Sames-JBL year 2002 basketball tournament began with a style at Sames Pest Control basketball court in Bagdadiyah district near Balad. Fernando Fajardo service manager rendered his inspirational speech on behalf of Mohammad Daoud, area manager of Sames Pest Control and Mohammad Bayoumi, GM of Al Haddaf Sportswear provided his moral-booster speech.
The award for the best in uniform for inter-company went to Papa John Pizza while in the inter-commercial award went to Ajwa Rmti and Azizia Panda Supermarket. The best mascot award went to Luna-Alesayi. In the first game, Luna-Alesayi scored over Ajwa Rmti. Both teams played organized basketball. Scores kept changing sides in the whole game.
In the resumption of the fourth quarter, Luna-Alesayi applied running game and pressure defense, Ajwa Rmti coach Orbano sense trouble requested a time out to contain the attack of Luna-Alesayi.
Fabian and Cuizon the dynamiz duo of Luna-Alesayi burned the hoop with their accurate snipping and no fear penetration to the shaded area.
Fabian, Manlapaz and Canlas scored 16, 15 and 14 points respectively for Luna-Alesayi while Buan top score with 17 points for Ajwa Rmti.
In the other game, Fitaihi Jewelers beat Papa John Pizza 55-46. Fitaihi Jewelers showed why they are the defending champion in the year 2001 JBL basketball tournament. Both teams played well but experience count a lot in the end game. Papa John Pizza, the new kid on the block showed toughness in the game with Cris Bautista the captain pounded the basket with his back to back triple in the final quarter. Fitaihi Jewelers went to their veteran Nonoy Guarra and Jong Agustin for the final offensive plays to register the first win. Guarra was top scorer with 20 points for Fitaihi Jewelers while Argota scored 16 points for the losers.
