Greening Saudi Project gains expert backing

  • The deal aims to provide scientific and technical expertise for the project and partner with Imar on the delivery of its overall strategy

RIYADH: A Saudi university’s specialist desert agriculture center has joined forces with a Riyadh-based engineering consultancy firm to lead a consortium delivering plans for the Greening Saudi Project.

Under the auspices of Dr. Tony Chan, president of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and Dr. Khalid Al-Abdulkader, chief executive officer of the Center for Vegetation Development and Desertification Prevention, KAUST’s Center for Desert Agriculture signed an agreement with Imar Engineering Consulting.

The deal aims to provide scientific and technical expertise for the project and partner with Imar on the delivery of its overall strategy.

The Center for Desert Agriculture provides the scientific and technological foundation for the strategic planning for an optimized, sustainable, and ecologically viable increase in the vegetative footprint of the Kingdom.

It will outline what species to plant and how to maintain sustainably, in the process providing an integrated system of afforestation initiatives for varied habitats throughout the Kingdom.

Kingdom, UNDP sign deal to boost road sector

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Roads General Authority signed a memorandum of understanding with the UN Development Programme to enhance cooperation and expand international partnerships in the roads sector.

The agreement supports the authority’s efforts to improve the efficiency of the sector and strengthen its presence in specialized international forums, in line with the roads sector program objectives.

The deal focuses on exchanging expertise across multiple areas and developing scientific studies and research according to international best practices, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

Through the collaboration, the authority will align local standards with global expertise while fostering partnerships that drive innovation, improve safety and enhance the quality of the Kingdom’s road network.

The authority highlighted its commitment to implementing key projects and initiatives to develop the network, including reducing road fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people, achieving a global ranking of sixth in the Road Quality Index by 2030 and ensuring the road network meets traffic safety standards set by the International Road Assessment Programme.
