ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday reduced the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel by Rs5 per liter to provide some financial relief to people, saying the new rates would be applicable from December 16.
The government has faced criticism for increasing fuel prices during the last few months amid rising inflation, though its top officials argue Pakistan still offers petroleum products at the cheapest rates in the region.
The country fixes these prices on a fortnightly basis to pass on the impact of fluctuating international prices to consumers.
“The government has decided to revise the existing prices of petroleum products in view of the declining price trend of petroleum products in global market and [transfer] the impact to the masses,” the Pakistan government’s finance division said in its notification.
With a reduction of Rs5, petrol and high-speed diesel will now be available for Rs140.82 and Rs137.62, respectively from Thursday.
Kerosene will be sold for Rs109.53 per liter after a decrease of Rs7 in its price while light diesel oil will be available for Rs107.06 after a Rs7.01 cut in its previous rate.
