US Treasury sanctions senior Houthi military officer Saleh Mesfer Alshaer

  • Department said Houthi commander had overseen seizure of property in Yemen valued at greater than $100 million

WASHINGTON D.C.: The US Treasury Department said on Thursday it sanctioned senior Houthi military officer Saleh Mesfer Alshaer, commander of the Houthi-controlled military logistics support organization.

“Alshaer has overseen the Houthis’ seizure of property in Yemen valued at greater than $100 million, using a variety of unlawful tactics, including extortion,” the Treasury Department said in a statement.

This extortion, had been “used to fund the Houthi military effort,” and was “yet another example of Houthi actions fueling instability and increasing the already extraordinary suffering of the Yemeni people,” the statement added.

“Saleh Mesfer Alshaer is the principal Houthi military officer responsible for pilfering assets from Yemeni citizens and directing a campaign of seizures that further prolongs the ongoing conflict in Yemen by obstructing its resolution,” said Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control Andrea M. Gacki.

“The United States remains committed to exposing those who seek to exacerbate the crisis in Yemen by denying them access to the global financial system,” she added.

Alshaer’s actions, like the continuing Houthi offensive against Marib, where millions of Yemenis displaced by years of war have fled for refuge, had “contributed to the severity of the humanitarian situation in Yemen,” the Treasury statement said.

Israeli fire kills two in Gaza as truce deal moves to next phase

  • Medics said two men were killed by Israeli forces in eastern Khan Younis
  • The two sides have traded blame over the truce violations

CAIRO: Israeli fire killed at least two Palestinians in Gaza on Thursday, health officials said, in the latest violence rattling a fragile ceasefire as Hamas and Israel looked to implement the second phase of the US-brokered Gaza peace plan.
Medics said two men were killed by Israeli forces in eastern Khan Younis, in an area adjacent to where the army operates. The Israeli military told Reuters it wasn’t aware of any casualties as a result of Israeli fire on Thursday.
The Gaza health ministry said Israeli airstrikes, tank shelling and gunfire have killed at least 490 people since the truce took effect in October after two years of war that widely demolished the Palestinian enclave.
Israel said four soldiers have been killed by Palestinian militants in the small coastal territory over the same period.
The two sides have traded blame over the truce violations.
By advancing to phase two, the US and mediator partners Egypt and Qatar must confront the more contentious issue of Hamas disarmament, which the group has long rejected. The plan also calls for deploying an international peacekeeping force.
