KARACHI: The body of a legendary comedian, Umer Sharif, who died at a hospital in Germany last week while he was being taken to the United States for medical treatment, arrived in Pakistan on Wednesday morning.
Sharif, who was suffering from cancer, had requested the government in September to help him get medical treatment abroad.
His air ambulance had to make a stopover in Germany since his condition had deteriorated.
“He will be laid to rest at the courtyard of the shrine of Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi,” his son Jawad Umer told Arab News while mentioning an eighth century mystic whose tomb is located in Clifton, Karachi.
Umer added that his father’s funeral would be held on Wednesday afternoon at the Umer Sharif Park, a recreational facility named after the deceased comedian, which is situated in the same vacinity as the Sufi shrine.
Earlier, Pakistan’s ambassador to Germany Dr. Mohammad Faisal said in a Twitter post Sharif’s body was being sent back to Karachi via the Turkish airline.
“Mortal remains of Mr. Umer Sharif are being flown to Karachi, Pakistan, shortly, via Turkish Airlines. His wife would accompany on the same flight,” he said.
Born in Karachi, Sharif introduced the concept of stage dramas in Pakistan in the 1980s which soon became popular across the border in India.
He was counted among the greatest comedians of the Subcontinent and died at the age of 66.
