Pakistani, Saudi foreign ministers discuss Afghanistan on UNGA sidelines

  • Shah Mahmood Qureshi says peaceful, stable Afghanistan important for Pakistan
  • Stresses world engagement ‘critical’ to avert humanitarian and economic crises in war-torn country

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi met his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Thursday and discussed the situation in Afghanistan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York, the Pakistani foreign office said.
The Pakistani foreign minister is currently leading his country’s delegation at the UNGA session, which Prime Minister Imran Khan will address virtually today, Friday.
Expressing satisfaction at close cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, the two figures discussed a number of issues of bilateral importance and shared their views on the latest situation in Afghanistan.
“A peaceful and stable Afghanistan is of crucial importance for Pakistan and the region,” Qureshi told his Saudi counterpart. “Sustained and positive engagement of the international community is critical for preventing a humanitarian crisis, averting an economic collapse, and supporting long-term development and stability in Afghanistan.”
He also apprised Prince Farhan of alleged human rights violations and demographic changes in India-administered Kashmir, the Pakistani foreign office said in a statement.
The two ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation in diverse fields and continue close collaboration on all issues of mutual interest.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have historic and deep-rooted fraternal ties which have stood the test of time, Qureshi said. He stressed the importance of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries to help enhance ties.
