RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Wednesday said it “regrets” the development in relations between Morocco and Algeria.
The statement comes a day after Algeria severed ties with Morocco due its “hostile actions,” blaming Rabat for the deadly wildfires that spread across the north of the country in recent days.
“The Saudi government hopes that relations between the two countries would be restored as soon as possible,” the foreign ministry said.
The Kingdom called on both sides to give priority to dialogue and diplomacy to find solutions to contentious issues to open a new page for relations between the two countries, in a way that benefits their people, achieves security and stability for the region, and enhances joint Arab action.
The UAE also said it regretted the decision.
“The UAE has always sought to strengthen and enhance Arab relations, and from this standpoint, it regrets the developments between Algeria and Morocco, and the severing of diplomatic relations between the two countries,” Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed said.
He added that the UAE has strong relations with both countries, and seeks to develop them in line with the state’s supportive approach to all joint efforts that serve Arab causes.
Bahrain and Kuwait also issued a similar statements.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation called for dialogue to resolve any possible differences,” a statement from the Jeddah-based organization said.
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit urged “both countries to exercise restraint and to avoid further escalation” in a statement late Tuesday.
