As anger mounts, #IsraeliAttackonAlAqsa becomes top trend on Pakistani Twitter

  • Netizens demand justice for community days after violent attacks and forced evictions by Israeli troops
  • Follows separate incidents of violence against Palestinians over the weekend

RAWALPINDI: Several prominent Pakistanis, including the country’s top leadership, turned to social media demanding justice for Palestinians and urging the international community to address ongoing atrocities by Israeli troops with #IsraeliAttackonAlAqsa becoming the top trend on Twitter in Pakistan amassing 1.13 million tweets on Tuesday.
Tensions escalated in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem over the weekend after Israeli forces tried to evict an entire Palestinian community and hand over their properties to ultra-extreme Jewish settlers.
More than 90 Palestinians were injured during the Israeli police crackdown on Palestinian protesters on Saturday, while 200 were wounded on Friday after Israeli forces attacked tens of thousands of worshippers praying inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of the oldest and holiest sites of Islam.
Videos of both incidents have since gone viral on social media, prompting reactions from all over the world, including Pakistan.
“The violence in Jerusalem – especially against children – is unbearable. This long conflict has cost many children their lives and their futures. Leaders must act immediately – there is no peace when children and civilians are not safe,” Malala Yousafzai, a Nobel laureate and human rights activist, said in a Twitter post.

Pakistan President Dr. Arif Alvi termed the incident as “Israeli apartheid” and a “shame,” calling out the incident on his personal Twitter account: “It is a shame that Israeli apartheid against Palestinians continues. Atrocious attack on peaceful praying Muslims is given the usual media spin of ‘clashes’.”
“My brothers don’t lose hope,” he added.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also condemned the attack before reaffirming Pakistan’s continued support for Palestine.
“Strongly condemn Israeli Forces’ attack esp during Ramazan on Palestinians in Qibla-e-Awaal, Al-Aqsa Mosque, violating all norms of humanity & int law. We reiterate support for Palestinian ppl. Int community must take immed action to protect Palestinians & their legitimate rights,” he said.

In a strongly worded Twitter post, Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari condemned the “Israeli state terrorism against Muslims praying in Al Aqsa mosque.”
“Earlier this Ramazan Israeli security forces had forced their way to Mosque’s minarets & stopped Azaan. Then they prevented Palestinians from traditional Iftar in the courtyard of the mosque. Now, this,” she added.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi echoed Mazari’s sentiments, adding: “Condemn in strongest terms attack on innocent worshippers in Al-Aqsa Mosque, first Qibla of Islam, by Israeli Occupation Forces in the holy month of Ramzan. Such brutality is against very spirit of humanity & human rights law. Pakistan stands steadfast in support of Palestinian cause.”

Meanwhile, prominent journalist Nadeem Farooq Paracha tweeted a photo of the Palestinian flag to his more than 600,000 followers, summing it up with: “That’s it. That’s the tweet. #Palestineforever”

Singer Asim Azhar also voiced opposition to the Israeli attacks on “defenseless worshippers,” adding: “I am sickened & disgusted. How can you attack a place of a worship & attack defenseless worshippers? And yet again, the world will stay silent on Israel’s continuous oppression on Palestine. Ya Allah reham! #IsraeliAttackonAlAqsa #PalestiniansLivesMatter”

Singer and actor Farhan Saeed also expressed his frustration at the “lack of action” from the world, as more videos from Palestine poured out on social media.
“The world’s deafening silence is criminal! How can the international community sit back and watch this happen? This IS terrorism!!”

Curfew extended in Gilgit-Baltistan, probe ordered after deadly Khamenei protests

  • At least 15 people were killed in clashes with law enforcement agencies over the weekend in Gilgit-Baltistan
  • Government also announces a de-weaponization campaign, crackdown on hate speech and cybercrime in region

ISLAMABAD: The government in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region on Tuesday extended a curfew in Gilgit district and ordered a judicial probe into violent protests over the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes last week, an official said.

At least 15 people were killed in clashes with law enforcement agencies over the weekend in GB, where protesters torched and vandalized several buildings, including United Nations regional offices, an army-run school, software technology park and a local charity building.

The violence prompted regional authorities to impose curfew in Gilgit and Skardu districts on March 2-4 as officials urged people to stay indoors and cooperate with law enforcers, amid widespread anger in Pakistan, particularly among members of the Shiite minority, over Khamenei’s killing.

On Tuesday, the GB government convened to review the situation and announced the extension of curfew in Gilgit among a number of security measures as well as ordered the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the weekend violence in the region.

“The government has made it clear that the law will strictly take its course against elements involved in vandalism at government institutions, private properties and incidents of vandalism in Gilgit and Skardu and no kind of mischief will be tolerated,” Shabbir Mir, a GB government spokesperson, said in a statement.

“In view of the security situation, curfew will remain in force in Gilgit, while the decision to extend the curfew in Skardu will be taken keeping the ground realities and the changing situation in view.”

The statement did not specify how long the curfew will remain in place in Gilgit.

Besides the formation of the judicial commission to investigate the violent clashes, the government also decided to launch a large-scale de-weaponization campaign in the entire Gilgit district, for which relevant institutions have been directed to immediately complete all necessary arrangements, according to Mir.

In addition, a crackdown has been ordered on hate speech, spread of fake news and cybercrime.

“The aim of these decisions is to ensure the rule of law, protect the lives and property of citizens and crack down on miscreants,” he said. “Approval has also been given to immediately survey the affected infrastructure and start their restoration work on priority basis.”

Demonstrators in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi also stormed the US Consulate on Sunday, smashing windows and attempting to burn the building. Police responded with batons, tear gas, and gunfire, leaving 10 people dead and more than 50 injured.

Pakistani authorities have since beefed up security at US diplomatic missions across the country, including around the US consulate building in Peshawar, to avoid any further violence.
