CAIRO: Dr. Mishaal bin Fahm Al-Salami, president of the Arab Parliament, has praised King Salman’s stance on aggressive remarks made by the Israeli prime minister, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The statements included Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s intention to annex land from the West Bank and impose Israeli sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea if he wins upcoming elections.
In a phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, King Salman said Netanyahu’s declaration was a dangerous escalation against the Palestinian people, and a flagrant violation of the UN charter and international norms. He called for an emergency meeting of foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
Al-Salami said the stand taken by King Salman, and his call to hold such an important meeting, was a sign that the entire international community should take responsibility.
He also appreciated the leading and pivotal role played by the Kingdom with regards to Palestine and Jerusalem.
The UN warned Netanyahu that his plan to annex the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank if re-elected would have no international legal effect.
