Pakistan says will have list of prisoners to be freed from UAE within a week

  • Pakistani advisor on overseas Pakistanis says "working hard" with UAE authorities, will deliver "positive response" soon
  • Bukhari visited Dubai Police headquarters in January and set up a joint committee to resolve prisoners' issues

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Special Assistant on Overseas Pakistanis said on Friday the government was working with United Arab Emirates authorities and would have a list of Pakistani prisoners to be released from UAE prisons within a week.

“We are working hard with UAE authorities and will have very positive response,” Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari told Arab News, adding that an agreement was in place but they were "working on numbers and timing."

"It will take another week or so to finalize," he said.

Bukhari, who is spearheading efforts for the early release of Pakistani prisoners languishing in jails across the UAE, visited Dubai Police headquarters in January this year to form a joint committee to resolve issues related to Pakistanis imprisoned in the UAE.

In recent months, Pakistan's government has intensified efforts to get its citizens freed from jails in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

During Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's visit to Pakistan in February this year, the immediate release of 2,107 Pakistani prisoners was announced by the crown prince after a personal request by PM Khan.
