This is with reference to the news report, ‘Baqala closure will help economy’ (March 27). There is no doubt that the decision makers would have done their homework well, and if it is really going to help the government policy, we are all for it. However, one cannot deny the fact that these baqalas or small shops in the neighborhoods are helpful in more than one way.
Apart from being convenient places to buy things, baqalas are also places where you meet neighbors for a quick chat and introduce yourself to newcomers. It is always noticed that one never fails to catch up on the local happenings with the man at the counter. It is really amazing that the baqala man is well informed and what he tells you, in most cases, is accurate. Some even help find an apartment on rent without taking commission.
As far as supermarkets are concerned, one may not know the names of those who serve you, no matter how frequently one may visit that place. On the other hand, the baqala man has enough information about you, such as your name, country and the work place.
Most of the baqala customers belong to either the middle class or lower middle class, and I have seen some baqalas extending credit which can be settled every month. I am sure these people will be badly affected by the proposed decision of closure of baqalas. One really wonders if baqalas will fade into history in the Kingdom. — S.H.Moulana, Riyadh
