Hyderabad Sunrisers get third win in IPL, beat Bangalore by 4 runs

  • Bangalore, already through to the playoffs, lost their way once Glenn Maxwell (40) was run out in the 15th over
  • Hyderabad have six points from 13 games and will finish last in the eight-team event

ABU DHABI: Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off a four-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday for only their third victory in this season’s Indian Premier League.

Bangalore, already through to the playoffs, lost their way once Glenn Maxwell (40) was run out in the 15th over before Hyderabad restricted Virat Kohli’s men to 137-6.

Needing 13 off the last over, A.B. de Villiers could only score a single off three full tosses bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar despite lofting the fast bowler for a six off the fourth delivery.

Earlier, after being put into bat, Hyderabad scored 141-7 as Bangalore allowed just a run-a-ball 36 in the last six overs and claimed five wickets.

“It’s been a really tough season but it was great to see these small improvements,” Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson said. “We’ve had a lot of last-over finishes and being on the right side of those is clearly helpful.”

Jason Roy top-scored with 44 off 38 balls, but once Dan Christian had the Englishman caught off his own bowling in the 15th over, Hyderabad lost their way.

The tournament’s leading wicket-taker Harshal Patel stretched his wickets tally to 29 by claiming 3-33 as he dismissed Wriddhiman Saha (10) and Jason Holder (16) in his last two overs.

Bangalore lost its skipper Kohli in the first over when he tried to play Kumar across the line and was trapped leg before wicket for 5.

Devdutt Padikkal (41) and Maxwell revived the chase with a 54-run partnership but Maxwell got run out and Padikkal holed out in the deep to give Rashid Khan (1-39) a wicket off his penultimate ball in the 17th over.

“Maxi’s run out was the key moment for us,” Kohli said. “With AB you’re never out of the game. … Things could have gone anywhere and Sunrisers held their nerves to not allow us to get away.”

Left-handed Shahbaz Ahmed (14) struck two boundaries, but de Villiers couldn’t capitalize on three lose deliveries in the last over.

With the last round of league games set to start from Thursday, Bangalore with 16 points are likely to finish third in the points table. Delhi Capitals are certain to finish among the top two with 20 points, followed by Chennai Super Kings, who have 18 points. Hyderabad have six points from 13 games and will finish last in the eight-team event.

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s Al-Baraa Al-Amoudi clinched the country’s first Muay Thai gold medal at the 2024 Senior World Championships this past weekend.

UAE woman aims to make history by rowing Arctic Ocean

  • 3-strong team aims to cover 1,500km in an 8-meter boat with no engine, motor or sails
  • They have partnered with the UN Environment Programme’s Clean Seas initiative and The Plastic Pledge

DUBAI: Three adventurers from the UAE will embark on an unprecedented 1,500km rowing expedition across the Arctic Ocean in July.

Toby Gregory, Orlagh Dempsey and Andrew Savill will tackle the harsh conditions in an eight-meter boat with no engine, motor or sail in a bid to highlight environmental advocacy and gender equality. They will not be accompanied by any support craft.

Once the challenge is complete, Dempsey will be the first woman in history to row the Arctic Ocean, a vital yet fragile ecosystem offering unique opportunities to study climate dynamics, biodiversity and resilience.

“Our mission goes beyond endurance,” said Gregory, project lead for the Arctic Challenge and founder of The Plastic Pledge.

“We aim to ignite the imagination of a generation about a fragile but important part of our planet, which is at the forefront of climate change and the fight against plastic pollution, emphasizing the urgent need to protect our environment.

“Orlagh will become the first female in history to row the open Arctic Ocean, showing that greatness knows no gender. We need to make equality the norm, not the exception.”

Dempsey, an elite endurance athlete, said: “The Arctic Challenge is more than an expedition; it’s a beacon for gender equality. As the first woman to row open Arctic waters, I hope to inspire others to break barriers and pursue their dreams.”

The team’s specially designed vessel, the “Ocean Guardian,” will be fully reliant on the crew’s physical power to make the crossing. The boat is equipped with solar panels for navigation and a desalination machine that will supply essential drinking water.

The team will row non-stop from Tromsø, Norway, to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, following a rigorous schedule of two hours on, two hours off. The voyage, expected to take 20-25 days, will traverse an area known as the “Devil’s Dance Floor” due to its unpredictability and difficulty level, and the remote Arctic ice shelf.

The Arctic Challenge is backed by a global community and aims to inspire action for environmental conservation. Over the past two years the team, through The Plastic Pledge, has engaged with over 200,000 students across over sixty schools and universities in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. They are aiming to inspire a million students to connect with the project.

Pakistan team take air force flight to Tajikistan for FIFA qualifier today

  • Flight schedule of team affected twice by technical issues
  • Game against Tajikistan scheduled today for 8pm Pakistan time

ISLAMABAD: After not being able to leave on time due to flight issues, the Pakistan national football team has departed for Tajikistan via an air force flight to play their final round two away fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers today, Tuesday, the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) said.
The team’s earlier scheduled flight for Tajikistan was halted “due to technical issues,” the federation had said on Monday.
“The national team departed from Noor Khan Air Base in a special aircraft of Pakistan Air Force,” PFF said in a statement, adding that the flight schedule of the national team had been affected twice.
The game against Tajikistan is scheduled for 8pm Pakistan time.
The South Asian team lost to the Saudi football team 4-0 in the first leg of the qualifying matches when they faced off in Al Ahsa. On June 6, Saudi Arabia beat Pakistan 3-0 at the Jinnah Football Stadium in Islamabad with Firas Tariq Nasser Al-Buraikan dealing Pakistan an early blow in the 26th minute followed by another one 15 minutes later, giving the visitors a 2-0 edge over the hosts.
Later, Pakistan suffered another setback in round one of the qualifiers when they lost 6-1 to Tajikistan in Islamabad days after losing to Saudi Arabia.
Pakistan are bottom-placed in Group G of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and already out of the race to qualify for the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches after losing four matches on the trot.
Apart from Saudi Arabia, the other two teams with Pakistan in Group G are Jordan and Tajikistan. In the second round of the qualifiers, a total of 36 football squads have been split into nine groups with four teams each. The winners and runners-up from each group would go through to the third round.

Al-Nassr in talks to sign Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny: Report

  • About $20.4m a year for the next 2 seasons likely
  • Ronaldo-led Al-Nassr failed to win league this year

RIYADH: Al-Nassr are in negotiations with Juventus to sign veteran goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, The Athletic reported on Monday.

The Poland international has reached an agreement in principle with the Riyadh club but a deal is yet to be finalized. It would be worth about $20.4 million a year for the next two seasons, the publication reported.

Szczesny has another year on his contract with Juventus, which finished third in Italy’s Serie A this year.

Szczesny has made 252 first-team appearances for the Italian giants, including 35 this season, and has won eight titles with the side.

If all goes well the 34-year-old will sign this week, according to the report, ahead of Poland’s participation in Euro 2024, which starts on Friday in Germany.

Reports indicate that the Turin club are likely to offer backup keeper Mattia Perin a new contract and are preparing to sign Monza’s Michele Di Gregorio as their new No. 1, paving the way for Szczesny’s departure.

Al-Nassr finished eight points and second behind bitter rivals Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

The Cristiano Ronaldo-led Al-Nassr lost to Al-Hilal in the Super Cup and King’s Cup in the current campaign, as well as the Riyadh Season Cup, a prestigious club friendly.

In March, Al-Nassr were dumped out of the Champions League by the UAE’s Al-Ain, which would later go on to win the championship, defeating Al-Hilal in the semifinals and Yokohama F. Marinos in the final.

Despite the setbacks, Ronaldo was happy with his achievements this year, having set the all-time SPL scoring record with 35 goals.

“It means a lot. I feel very happy. It’s probably one of the best seasons I’ve ever had in my career in terms of goals but assists too,” said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner last week.

South Africa edge Bangladesh by four runs at T20 World Cup

  • South Africa virtually certain of a place in the second round Super Eight phase
  • Bangladesh, with two points, still well-placed to join them

NEW YORK: South Africa defeated Bangladesh by just four runs in another low-scoring game at the T20 World Cup on Monday, a result likely to spark fresh debate over the suitability of the pitch being used in New York.
South Africa were restricted to 113-6 in their 20 overs with Heinrich Klaasen top-scoring on 46 while fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib returned a career-best 3-18.
However, Bangladesh could only manage 109-7 in reply as South Africa wrapped up a third win in three Group D games.
“It was not a nice one to watch, it was good that the boys got it over the line,” said Klaasen.
“The wicket is not too great for strokeplay.”
Chasing just 114 to win on the controversial drop-in strip at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh initially struggled in the face of the Proteas’ pace battery.
They were 50-4 at the 10-over mark having lost Tanzid Hasan (nine) to Kagiso Rabada while Anrich Nortje accounted for skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (14) and Shakib Al Hasan (three).
Spinner Keshav Maharaj sent back Liton Das for just nine.
However, Towhid Hridoy, who top-scored with 40 when Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka in their opener, and 38-year-old Mahmudullah steadied the ship for the Tigers.
The pair put on 44 for the fifth wicket before Hridoy was lbw to Rabada for 37, an innings which took up 34 balls and featured two fours and two sixes.
Bangladesh took seven off the penultimate over but still needed 11 off the last to be bowled by Maharaj.
That became seven off four balls. With the pressure building both Jaker Ali and Mahmudullah were caught by Aiden Markram going for big heaves over long on.
Needing six off the final ball, Taskin Ahmed could only produce a scrambled single.
“I think this is a match we should have won. In the last couple of overs they bowled well, but this can happen in cricket,” said Shanto.
Earlier, Bangladesh restricted South Africa to 113-6 with Tanzim backed up by Taskin’s 2-19 after Proteas skipper Markram won the toss and opted to bat.
South Africa were struggling at 23-4 at one stage before Klaasen and David Miller, celebrating his 35th birthday, came to their team’s rescue with a partnership of 79 for the fifth wicket.
Klaasen’s 46 came off 44 balls with two fours and three sixes before he was clean-bowled by Taskin, slogging across the line in the 18th over with the score on 102.
Miller, who made a match-winning undefeated 59 in the nervy win over the Netherlands, went four runs later, bowled by Rishad Hossain.
His innings of 29 came from 38 deliveries with a boundary and one six.
The Proteas had been 12-4 against the Dutch on the same pitch on Saturday.
On Monday, they were quickly four down for just 23 runs in the fifth over thanks to Tanzim and Taskin.
Tanzim, playing in only his eighth T20 international, started the collapse, having out-of-form opener Reeza Hendricks lbw for nought off his first ball.
Star batsman Quinton de Kock was the next to go, clean-bowled by the 21-year-old for 18 with the total on 19.
Taskin uprooted the stumps of Markram (four) before Tanzim grabbed the third of his opening spell when he forced Tristan Stubbs to spoon a catch to Shakib Al Hasan in the covers without scoring.
Miller could have been dismissed on 13 but wicket-keeper Liton Das dropped an edge off Mahmudullah’s first ball.
With South Africa virtually certain of a place in the second round Super Eight phase, Bangladesh, with two points, are still well-placed to join them.
