SADAFCO’s sustainability report highlights progress toward Vision 2030

Saudia Dairy and Foodstuff Company has unveiled its latest sustainability report for the year 2023, showcasing its steadfast commitment to sustainability, innovation, and alignment with the ambitious goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Developed under the esteemed Global Reporting Initiative’s Universal Standards and as per Tadawul stock exchange guidelines, this report highlights SADAFCO’s leading role in integrating sustainable practices across its operations, setting a benchmark for the industry.

SADAFCO is dedicated to environmental stewardship, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. Through initiatives like replacing steam boilers with energy-efficient models, the company anticipates saving up to 2.1 million kg/ year in CO2 emissions. Additionally, SADAFCO plans to offset 40 percent of its electricity consumption with solar power by the end of 2024, while enhancing operational efficiency through its Digital Factory Program.

Working toward a zero-emissions fleet by 2045, SADAFCO is transitioning to zero-emission vehicles and collaborating with NTSC to install EV charging stations. The recent acquisition of the first frozen electric vehicle in the Middle East underscores the company’s dedication to pioneering sustainable transportation solutions.

“We aim to embed sustainability across all facets of our operations. Our alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 is evident in our strategic priorities, which focus on operational efficiency, value chain enhancement, and regional growth,” said Patrick O. Stillhart, CEO of SADAFCO. He added: “Despite a shorter financial year, we have made remarkable progress in fleet decarbonization, digital transformation, and supplier engagement, resulting in significant improvements in our factory operations.”

SADAFCO’s sustainability strategy is centered on product innovation, focusing on crafting healthier options by introducing new non-dairy alternatives and reducing sugar and salt content. The recent launch of the Mezete brand by Saudia range products exemplifies this commitment, offering natural and preservative-free alternatives to consumers. This dedication to providing healthier choices is rooted in SADAFCO’s philosophy of prioritizing consumer delight and ensuring the delivery of innovative, high-quality, and safe products while empowering consumers through transparent communication and responsible marketing practices.

In tandem with its sustainability efforts, SADAFCO actively engages in social responsibility initiatives such as the Saudia Falcons program, aimed at nurturing and empowering youth. Additionally, the company’s consumer education campaigns play a pivotal role in promoting healthy food choices and fostering informed decision-making among consumers.

mentl awards 2024: Celebrating mental health champions in Saudi Arabia

As the conversation around mental health continues to gain momentum in the region, the highly anticipated “mentl awards 2024” are back, bigger and more inspiring than ever before, and for the first time open to people and projects in Saudi Arabia.

The groundbreaking awards — created by mental health consultancy mentl — aim to recognize and celebrate the individuals and organizations, in the public and private sectors, making significant strides in this vital area.

Last year’s awards saw over 70 companies from the UAE reaching the finals at a glittering gala dinner at St. Regis Downtown in Dubai. This year, mentl awards have expanded to welcome entries from across the GCC, including Saudi Arabia, as well as the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain. With a commitment to recognizing merit and excellence, these awards shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes and game-changers in workplaces and communities.

Last year’s winner: Adel bin Hdaya Al-Falasi

A standout from last year’s awards was the inspiring Emirati Adel bin Hdaya Al-Falasi, once dubbed “the possessed boy,” who bravely shared his experience with mental illness and who lifted the trophy as a Mental Health Hero. Since winning the award, Al-Falasi has grown into a powerful mental health advocate who challenges stigma, helping others in his community seek help. He returns to the awards this year as a judge.

The awards are open to public and private sectors, from startups and SMEs to major corporates and government departments in Saudi Arabia. The categories cover a wide range of industries, including finance, healthcare, education, logistics, technology, and more. Each category recognizes outstanding mental health initiatives that have made a significant impact.

Award categories include:

  • Best Mental Health Initiative in Saudi Arabia
  • Best Mental Health Initiative in the UAE
  • Best Mental Health Initiative in Qatar
  • Best Mental Health Initiative in Bahrain
  • Best Mental Health Initiative in Kuwait
  • Best Mental Health Initiative in Oman
  • Outstanding Mental Health Initiative in Education

Independent jury

Recipients of the mentl awards 2024 will be chosen by an independent jury comprising leaders from both the public and private sectors. This panel includes healthcare professionals, mental health champions, CEOs, industry leaders, well-being advocates, and inspiring athletes and adventurers. Their collective expertise ensures that the awards are given purely on merit.

“It is time to honor those who are transforming the way we approach mental health, and the mentl awards 2024 is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at celebrating these champions within corporate environments, public sector institutions, and educational establishments. By recognizing those who have taken a stand to make a difference, we aim to inspire further progress and innovation in the field of mental health,” organizers said in a statement.

Early bird entry — available in July — to each category costs approximately SR560 ($150) inclusive of VAT and bank charges. Organizations can nominate as many projects or initiatives as they feel meet the criteria. Entries are now open, and mentl is encouraging all eligible participants to take this opportunity to showcase their impactful work.

Saudi space graduate Sarah Alhabbas lauded in Germany

Sarah Alhabbas, the first graduate of Serco’s Space Graduate Program, was invited on Thursday to the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Germany to meet with Prince Abdullah bin Khalid bin Sultan Al-Saud, the Saudi ambassador to Germany. The invitation was in recognition of her remarkable progress within a sector pitted to be instrumental in the achievement of Vision 2030. During the meeting, Alhabbas discussed how her experience with Serco can be an inspiration to the next generation of Saudi talent.

Alhabbas, currently working in Serco’s Copernicus Operations Support Services or COP-2, with the European Space Operations Center in Darmstadt, Germany as part of her intensive training program, was joined at this special event by Serco Middle East’s Head of Space Amar Vora, Serco’s KSA Country Director Mona Althagafi and Serco’s Head of COP-2 Islam Alizada. This prestigious invitation underscores Saudi Arabia’s keenness to develop its human resources and the pivotal role Serco is playing in advancing the Kingdom’s capabilities in the space industry, highlighting how the private sector company is supporting the Kingdom’s commitment to nurturing local talent capabilities to support Vision 2030 as a government impact partner.

Alhabbas was chosen by Serco as their first space graduate from more than 400 applications. An aerospace engineering graduate with a minor in applied mathematics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the US, she joined Serco as a graduate spacecraft operations engineer. In the past 12 months, Alhabbas underwent comprehensive training in the Kingdom and is now coming to the end of an intensive six-month training program at Serco’s COP-2 facilities in Germany, aimed at deepening her theoretical knowledge. Upon completion, Alhabbas will be certified as a proficient spacecraft operations engineer in a graduation taking place later this summer. After supporting a launch campaign, she will return to Saudi Arabia where she will transfer the knowledge gained to the wider Serco space team and its clients.

This accomplishment highlights the broader impact of Serco’s initiatives in the Kingdom. Serco has more than 60 years of space experience globally, supporting civil and military space programs, including those of the European Space Agency, the UK Ministry of Defense and NASA. In 2023, it launched a dedicated space division in the Middle East to support local talent and develop regional capabilities, ensuring the transfer of its wide-ranging operational knowledge and capabilities to the region. Its graduate, space-specific program is the first of its kind not only within the Kingdom, but also across Serco globally. By leveraging decades of global experience in the space industry, Serco is playing a crucial role in transferring knowledge and skills to Saudi nationals, impacting a better future.

Prince Abdullah said: “Sarah Alhabbas’ accomplishments epitomize the potential and the great expectation of Saudi Arabia’s youth in pioneering new frontiers. Her journey marks a significant personal achievement and symbolizes the leadership’s confidence and ambition in our nation’s youth. We are happy to celebrate Sarah’s accomplishment and look forward to her contribution to the Kingdom’s aerospace sector.”

Alhabbas said: “This opportunity to train with the European Space Agency and seasoned, international experts has been transformative. I am deeply honored by this recognition from Prince Abdullah. It reaffirms my commitment to contributing to the Saudi space sector and to inspiring other young Saudis to pursue their passions in this exciting field.”

Vora, Serco’s Middle East head of space, said: “At Serco, we are committed to bringing our global expertise to Saudi Arabia, fostering local talent and driving the Kingdom’s space ambitions. Sarah’s success is a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication and the right support. We are thrilled to see her represent the future of Saudi space exploration.”
